Knotty Pine To Divine!

Kitchen Transformation

This kitchen already had so much going for it—high ceilings, a walk-in pantry, and a beautiful view—but it needed a fresh perspective to truly shine.

Our remodel centered on elevating both form and function, with professional-grade appliances, a highly efficient layout, and a refined take on a clean farmhouse aesthetic.

The Original Kitchen

Wrapped entirely in knotty pine, the space initially felt heavy and visually overwhelming. Architectural quirks—like tight corners flanking the sink and a tucked-away nook beneath the stairs—added another layer of complexity.

Rather than removing the existing plank (which also functioned as drywall), we chose to paint it, softening its presence while preserving the subtle texture that now adds warmth and character without dominating the room.

Layout Adjustment

The kitchen layout was reconfigured to improve balance and flow. The statement hood was relocated to the wall left of the sink, with the professional refrigerator positioned to the right. This adjustment breaks up what was previously a long, uninterrupted wall of cabinetry, double ovens, and pantry—creating a more visually balanced and functional design.

Key Features

Ceiling height painted upper cabinets with rich wood tone lowers

Striking light fixtures over the island for ambience and function

Statement hood with glass front cabinetry to create a focal point

Custom beverage station in under stair nook for a touch of luxury

Functional island with seating for family gatherings

Demolition Plan

Painting the knotty pine plank on the walls provided interest and texture. The cabinet wood tone was thoughtfully selected to create contrast while still harmonizing with the existing oak flooring.

The Design Process – Step One

First, we drew the space to scale in sketch format. Once the basic design was approved we rendered the drawings and set out to obtain samples of every finish.

Pro Tip: Always get physical samples whenever possible. Compare all samples together with your existing floor, countertop material, the cabinet stain, paint and hardware finishes before purchasing. Your designer can often order samples at no cost for you.

The Design Refined

Detailed 3D renderings of the proposed remodel were developed to clearly illustrate spatial relationships, design intent, functionality, and overall aesthetic. They also served as a valuable tool for testing and refining key design elements.

Rendering of the under stair nook, turned beverage bar

After reviewing the beverage station with a statement backsplash and a lighter cabinet in the renderings, we determined that continuing the painted pine plank created a more cohesive look with the overall kitchen design.

A note about renderings. Sometimes it is not possible to use elements that are exact replicas of products chosen. We get as close as possible, allowing the client to visualize how their space will look.

Final reveal

What began as a space full of potential is now a kitchen that feels intentional, inviting, and beautifully balanced. By working with the home’s existing architecture—rather than against it—we were able to lighten, simplify, and reimagine the space into something that truly supports how this family lives day to day. The result is a kitchen that not only functions seamlessly, but also feels calm, cohesive, and timeless.

If you’re living in a space that almost works but not quite, thoughtful design can make all the difference. Whether you’re planning a full remodel or simply exploring possibilities, a well-considered approach can help you see your home in a whole new way.

When you are ready to take the next step, I’d be happy to connect and explore what’s possible for your space!
